Bill King used the phrase "stood like a statue" in his Junkyard Blawg describing QB Grayson Lambert dropping back to pass. An association flashed in my mind "stood like a statue staring at the machine." Is that a line from a song or a poem? I Googled it and didn't find anything familiar. I did find numerous instances of the phrase "stood like a statue staring" and "staring at the machine." These words must have a natural connection making them a temptation to writers who aren't afraid of cliches. But where did I read or hear them? Mighty Casey? I check it and, no. Wait, I've got it! It's from "Pinball Wizard!"
"He stands like a statue he don't hear no buzzers or bells." But my memory is still wrong- here are the true lyrics:
He stands like a statue,
Becomes part of the machine.
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean.
He plays by intuition,
The digit counters fall.
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!
